Art Gallery Assistant

Art Gallery Assistants will have the opportunity to work in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery on the Beaufort Historic Site. Assistants welcome visitors to the gallery, handle all retail sales of artwork, including cash, check and credit card charges, and enter artwork into the inventory as it is brought in. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Some even bring their work with them when volunteering!

Visitor Center Assistant

Visitor Center Assistants greet visitors and answer questions regarding both the Beaufort Historic Site and Beaufort in general. Knowledge of the Beaufort Historic Site and general area is required. The assistant can also handle sales and answer/transfer calls.

Historical Interpreter / Docent

If you have a love of history and enjoy working closely with the public, this is the opportunity for you! Docents lead tourgoers through various buildings on the Beaufort Historic Site, giving a detailed explanation of the structure and its contents. A separate docent-led tour includes pointing out specific headstones and explaining its relevance at the enchanted Old Burying Ground. Shadowing current docents and extensive training is part of the training for this role. Docents also wear colonial attire, which can be provided. Beaufort Historic Site tours are Monday through Saturday at 10:00 am and 2:30 pm. Old Burying Ground tours are offered within a 24-hour notice.

Educational Program Volunteer

Educational Program Volunteers educate current and future generations on the rich history of Beaufort. The Beaufort Historic Site offers educational programs to in-county and out-of-county schools throughout the year, including building tours, Old Burying Ground tours, Courthouse Dramatization, Harvest Time, and Kindergarten Thanksgiving. Scripts for each educational program are provided. Colonial attire is required, which can be provided.

Hands-on training and training materials are a part of all opportunities. Training is on-going throughout the year.

2023 VOLUNTEER AWARDS

During the Association’s January meeting, four awards were presented recognizing volunteers for their time and dedication in 2023. The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Marshall Beach. Marshall serves as the BHA Finance Officer, a volunteer conductor on the bus tours, a guide in the Old Burying Ground, and an important member of the Foundation Board. The Longevity Award went to Lawson Faulkner for his ever-present smile while he greets guests for bus or special house tours. The Couple of Year was Vick and Pat Moore who are such an inspiration to all of us. We call Vick “McGiver” because he can fix anything and does just that with our buildings and grounds needs. Pat keeps our art gallery organized and trains new volunteers. They attend most events, always helping in the background. Susan McGee was the Newcomer Award winner. She came to our Volunteer Training event in 2023 and has been an invaluable weekly volunteer answering our phones and greeting visitors in our Welcome Center. Congratulations to these special volunteers!
