Educational Programming

Hands-On Learning at the Beaufort Historic Site

The Beaufort Historic Site brings history off the page and into direct experience for students of all ages. Programs are designed to meet North Carolina Standard Course of Study guidelines for Social Studies and can be customized to fit specific curriculum needs throughout the school year.

As part of the BHA’s mission to educate current and future generations about the area’s coastal heritage, the Beaufort Historic Site offers a wide range of programs for school groups year-round. Many programs can be adapted to fit grade level and curriculum requirements.

Living History Programs

A series of hands-on workshops illustrating the traditional arts, crafts, and practical skills of early Beaufort residents. Most programs can be customized for students at any grade level. Living History Programs continue through the summer months and are open to adults and children alike. All summer programs and workshops are led by local artisans, with proceeds benefitting the Beaufort Historical Association.

Curriculum-Based Programs

Courthouse Dramatization

Designed to complement the North Carolina 8th grade curriculum, the Courthouse Dramatization gives students a direct look at the early American legal system. Inside the fully restored wood-frame Carteret County Courthouse c.1796, students role-play an actual court case and decide the verdict themselves.

Kindergarten Thanksgiving

Held every fall, Kindergarten Thanksgiving invites kindergarten classes to the Leffers Cottage to spend time with Mr. Leffers and his family as they prepare for the winter months. Students participate in open hearth cooking, butter churning, weaving and spinning, and food preservation. Registration opens in early October.

Harvest Time

An annual program correlated with the North Carolina State Adopted School Curriculum, Harvest Time gives 4th grade students a firsthand experience of life in colonial Beaufort. Students rotate through hands-on demonstrations across the historic buildings and gardens, taking part in open hearth cooking, food preservation, candle dipping, woodworking, and colonial gardening. Registration opens in September.
