Volunteer at the Beaufort Historic Site

Share Your Time and Help Preserve History

The Beaufort Historical Association runs on the time and dedication of its volunteers. Whether you have a few hours a month or a standing weekly commitment, there is a role here that fits.

Volunteer opportunities abound at the Beaufort Historic Site. This is your chance to give back and support the continuing mission to preserve and educate future generations about Beaufort’s history. Opportunities are available to fit every interest, age, and schedule, from guiding tours to assisting with retail sales to driving the double-decker bus and more.

Volunteer Roles

Art Gallery Assistant

Art Gallery Assistants work in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery on the Beaufort Historic Site. Responsibilities include welcoming visitors, handling retail sales of artwork by cash, check, and credit card, and entering new artwork into inventory as it arrives. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Visitor Center Assistant

Visitor Center Assistants greet visitors and answer questions about both the Beaufort Historic Site and the surrounding area. Knowledge of the site and general area is required. Assistants also handle sales and manage incoming calls.

Historical Interpreter/ Docent

Docents lead tour groups through the buildings on the Beaufort Historic Site, providing detailed explanations of each structure and its contents. A separate docent-led tour covers the Old Burying Ground, pointing out specific headstones and the stories behind them. Training includes shadowing current docents and extensive preparation materials. Colonial attire is worn during tours and can be provided. Building tours run Monday through Saturday at 10:00 am and 2:30 pm. Old Burying Ground tours are available with 24 hours notice.

Educational Program Volunteer

Educational Program Volunteers bring Beaufort’s history to life for school groups from in-county and out-of-county schools throughout the year. Programs include building tours, Old Burying Ground tours, the Courthouse Dramatization, Harvest Time, and Kindergarten Thanksgiving. Scripts are provided for each program. Colonial attire is required and can be provided.

Hands-on training and training materials are part of all volunteer roles. Training is ongoing throughout the year.
