SUMMARY:Annie Kinney Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Join the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery in welcoming artist Annie Kinney on February 12 from 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. for an art show!\nKinney hails from Ireland and creates many beautiful pieces that showcase her childhood and her time now spent on the Crystal Coast.\n\nStay tuned to the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery Facebook page to see her work! She will be the Featured Artist for the months of February and March.\n\nFor more information about Kinney or the opening\, please visit beauforthistoricsite.org\, call 252-728-5225 or stop by the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery at 130 Turner St.\nThe event will follow all COVID-19 procedures. Masks required.\n\n\nMattie King Davis Art Gallery to Welcome Artist Annie Kinney in February \nThe Mattie King Davis Art Gallery is excited to welcome artist Annie Kinney for her first ever solo show on February 12\, 4:30 until 6 p.m. Kinney paints primarily with acrylics. Her work showcases life on the Crystal Coast as well as of her homeland\, Ireland. Kinney joined the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery this past March and also regularly volunteers for the Gallery. Kinney will be the featured artist for February and March. \n  \nFor Kinney\, creating art has been a lifetime experience. “I spent my childhood painting garden gnomes and selling them to tourists at the Cliffs of Moher\, on the west coast of Ireland\,” she said. “After entering my first juried exhibition in January 2018\, and winning an honorable mention\, that accolade became the catalyst for making a greater commitment to my art career.” \n“My favorite thing about painting is the very beginning or the “block in”\, where I start with simple shapes and basic color to visualize the finished piece\,” she said. “Getting a strong start is the most fundamental element for me in painting.” \n  \nWhen asked how she would describe her style\, she said: “At first\, I was very occupied with the notion that I must have a style. After taking many workshops\, I’ve realized that value relationships in a painting are more important than trying to develop a style. One’s style is like handwriting; it’s unique and becomes more apparent as you create.” \n  \nKinney will be showcasing a number of new pieces for the show. One piece\, “Lifeguard Station at Fanore Beach\,” she said is her favorite piece of her entire show collection as she feels not only did she give it justice\, but it also gives her a great sense of nostalgia. \n  \n“I grew up going to Fanore Beach\, with its dark golden sand\, crystal clear water and the backdrop of bare limestone hills that make this a very distinctive Geosite known as the “Burren” …it is a unique landscape…with County Clare having the most extensive landscapes of this type in all of Europe\,” she said. “A day at Fanore Beach was always great fun as a youngster! With the first hint of a summer-like day\, surfers and beach bathers would disrobe and head for the Baltic waters of the Atlantic for a dip. The one-manned lifeguard station was our reassurance that we wouldn’t drown while the caution flag was flying!” \n  \nKinney said she hopes all will come to her show and see for themselves the passion she puts into each piece. “My approach to painting is to capture the essence of my subjects\, using light as my compass. My art is crafted using the best acrylic pigments\, and every painting is sealed in an archival varnish that will protect it for decades\,” she said. “I have an emotional connection to all my paintings and I hope you will too when you visit my show at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery!” \n  \nFor more information about Annie Kinney and or the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery\, visit beauforthistoricsite.org\, follow the gallery on Facebook @mattiekingdavisgallery\, call 252-728-5225\, or stop in at the gallery open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner St\, Beaufort N.C. 28516. \n  \n###

SUMMARY:Fall Art Sale
DESCRIPTION:Beaufort Historical Association Honors Fall Party with Art Auction \n  \nFor the past 28 years\, the Fall Party has taken place every year as a way to raise funds for the Beaufort Historical Association. While it is about raising these crucial funds\, it is also about joining together as friends to celebrate the Association\, season\, and one another. \n  \nThis year’s Fall Party will be unlike any other as it will be a Fall Art Auction. It will be a celebration of the history of the party and the artists who have been featured. The Association is excited to welcome back past Fall Party artists for this special event. While unable to join in person\, this virtual aspect will allow all to learn about the history of the Fall Party\, Association\, and have the chance to purchase beautiful artwork from past artists. \n  \nThe art will be gradually added and is available for bidding at bidpal.net/2020fallartsale. The auction will end October 10 at 9 p.m. As the event nears\, the association will share further information about the auction on their socials\, website\, and bidpal.net/2020fallartsale. The proceeds will go towards the restorations efforts of the Beaufort Historic Site Old Jail c.1829. \n  \nThe Association will be featuring work from the following Fall Party artists: Dee Knott (1992)\, Charles Sharpe (1995)\, Coleman Dance (2000)\, Judy Crane (2004)\, Dan Nelson (2010)\, Bob Rankin (2011)\, Trisha Adams (2013)\, Jim Carson (2014)\, Susan Hecht (2015)\, Fen Rascoe (2016)\, Jaquelin Perry (2018)\, Gosia Tojza (2019). \n  \nSince 1992 the party has been held at a private Beaufort home\, and each year the walls of that home have been filled with the breathtaking art of a local artist\, like the ones mentioned above. The first party took place at the historic Sloo House c. 1768. The owners Mr. and Mrs. R. Hunter Chadwick\, Jr. were the first to open their doors for the party. \n  \n“We were flattered to be asked\,” Brenda Chadwick said. “Everyone was helpful in the planning process. It was such a pleasant experience. People were happy and excited for it to be at a different venue.” \n  \nThe watercolors of national award-winning artist Dee Knott were showcased and for sale that year. Her pieces were a compilation of still lifes\, boats\, landscapes\, and portraits. \nBefore Knott’s paintings adorned the walls of Chadwick’s home\, the two women had already been acquainted. \n  \n“I had a gift shop called Chadwick House and it was right beside Royal James in Beaufort\,” Chadwick said. Just directly across the way was the studio of Dee Knott\, right beside the Beaufort Historic Site Welcome Center. \n  \n“She kept coming in and buying artificial pansies all the time\, and finally I asked “Dee\, what are you doing with all these pansies?!” and she said “Well I am painting them!” and all of her paintings were just fabulous. The art is the most important part of the party I think and marvelous job has been done bringing in the artist each year.” \n  \nThe event was a momentous success for the Association. It attracted an estimated 175 people and netted $9\,500. It took the help of the staff\, many volunteers\, and sponsors such as Richard and Lucia Stanley to begin this annual special event. “The party has really grown in success over the years from\, while the location changes the art always remains consistently beautiful and different\,” Lucia Stanley said. \n  \n“We are missing so much this year\, be we cannot let October go by without recognizing Brenda Chadwick who had the idea for the first Fall Party\, and the homeowners and artists who kept it amazing through the years\,” Patricia Suggs\, Executive Director of the Beaufort Historical Association said. \n  \nFor more information about the Fall Art Auction call 252-728-5225. To learn more about the artists and to start bidding on the art\, visit bidpal.net/2020fallpartyartsale. The auction will close Saturday\, October 10 at 9 p.m.

SUMMARY:Janet Jaworski Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Please be aware that all events at the Beaufort Historic Site are open to change in light of COVID19. For more information please call 252-728-5225. Thank you. \nThe Mattie King Davis Art Gallery is excited to welcome artist Janet Jaworski for an art show on Saturday\, August 15 at 5 p.m. at 130 Turner Street\, Beaufort\, N.C. The event is free and will follow federal\, state\, and local guidance regarding COVID19 during the time of the show. Jaworski is a North Carolina artist based in Morehead City. She paints primarily with oils. Many of her works showcase the beautiful wildlife\, seascapes\, and more of the Crystal Coast. \n\n\n\n“When my husband came down here for work\, we were struck by the area\,” she said. “We would be wandering and exploring nature and wildlife\, he started doing more photography… and now many of his photos are the start of my paintings.” \n\n\n\n    \n\n\nJaworski’s style reflects her vibrant personality; her paintings are full of color and life rather it be one of the tumbling ocean or a soaring bird. “My style has always had to do with color. I love color and it is one of those elements I strive to have standout in my paintings\,” she said. “I also want to portray a realist image but work within those images to create abstractions.” \n\n\n\nShe is no stranger to design though. While raising her family she spent much of her career working in graphic design in Worcester\, M.A. As her children began to move out she zoned in more on her art. She began taking workshops at the Worcester Art Museum and even started selling some work at a local farmers market. \n\n\n\n“My daughter was in charge of a farmer’s market in Acton…the market allowed for one artisan per week and she signed me up for a slot for spring and fall\,” she said. “I was not expecting much\, but to my surprise I sold quite a bit\, and in the fall\, people came back to buy again. She feels very proud to have launched me 11 years ago.” \n\n\n\nAfter moving to North Carolina she became involved in the artistic community. She is on the Executive Board of the Arts Council of Carteret County\, takes classes with artist Heather Sink\, participates in multiple workshops throughout the county\, volunteers at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery\, and is in charge of hanging art at the Cassie Howe Algeo Gallery within the Carteret Health Care Hospital. She said she loves getting to meet fellow artists and travel to different locations to create. \n\n\n\nWhen asked about her favorite accomplishment thus far she said\, “Bringing people joy. Once you have finished a painting it really has a life of its own.” \n\n\n\nJoin us in welcoming Jaworski this August at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery. She will be the featured artist for August and September. For more information about the gallery or the artist\, call 252- 728-5225\, visit beauforthistoricsite.org\, or stop by the gallery at 130 Turner Street.

SUMMARY:Membership Drive Valentine Party
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Sunday before Valentine’s Day\, the Beaufort Historical Association welcomes the public to enjoy food\, fun\, and fellowship as it opens the authentically restored homes and buildings of the Beaufort Historic Site during its annual Valentine Membership Party. This year’s event will be held Sunday\, February 9\, between 2 and 4 p.m.\, welcoming current members and encouraging new members to join. \nThe Membership Drive has been a tradition for many years. It started in 1992 as a Valentine’s Party in a private home to attract new members. By 2000 the planning committee realized that the attendance had more than outgrown any private home in Beaufort. The party is now hosted at the Historic Site\, where two acres and all authentically restored houses and buildings are open for members and potential members to enjoy and learn more about this area’s coastal heritage. \nEach house or building features different\, special refreshments for visitors to enjoy. There will be beer and pizza in the Jail\, olive oil tastings in the Courthouse\, an oyster roast in the School Master’s Cottage\, hot mulled cider in the Leffer’s Cottage\, fudge in the Apothecary\, sparkle and fizz beverages in the Josiah Bell House\, wine and cheese in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery\, hot chocolate and coffee in the Safrit Historical Center\, and hors d’oeuvres and spirts under the tent. An on-site docent will be present in each of the buildings to answer questions about the history of the structure and the furnishings found within. \nA special part of the Valentine Membership Party will be an art opening with featured artist\, Heather Sink\, whose work will be on display and for purchase at the circa 1732 Mattie King Davis Art Gallery. Sink hails from Northern England and now resides in Beaufort. Many of her pieces showcase her time spent in Northern England as well as here in Beaufort. \n\n\n\n“My favorite thing about painting is the journey\, the process\, and learning\,” she said. “Painting has connected me with all kinds of wonderful people that have a common interest.” \n\nBefore opening Craving Art Studio she taught art to students in the North Carolina Public School System. Today she still teaches art in her studio and at workshops. Many of the artists featured in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery have even been mentored and or influenced by Sink. Heather Sink will be the gallery’s featured artist for February and March\, be sure to stop in and see her gorgeous work. Visit the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery Facebook page to get a peek at some pieces! \nAll are invited to this FREE Valentine’s Party. Be sure to come and bring along family\, friends\, co-workers\, and neighbors who have an interest in joining the Beaufort Historical Association and taking part in the varied preservation and education programs. \nThe BHA’s strong association of individuals dedicated to preserving the treasured history of Beaufort spans across the county\, state\, and nation and offers a wide range of membership levels. The BHA will present the prestigious Edward and Frances Piver Volunteer of the Year Award to the outstanding volunteer of the year. This award was established in 1968 by the Piver children to honor their parents. \nThe selected recipients of the Piver award are a group that has excelled above their commitment to the BHA and have been leading figures in its success. The Association is fortunate to have volunteers who give their time and talents in a variety of ways from guided tours\, driving the double-decker bus\, serving on committees\, answering phones\, helping with events\, and more. \nThe Newcomer\, Longevity\, Couples\, and Fundraiser awards will also be presented. The Newcomer is for the “rookie” who has made a meaningful contribution in a relatively short time as a member.  The Longevity is presented to a long-time volunteer who has devoted time over many years and provided unselfish assistance to the BHA in a variety of ways. The Fundraiser is for the person who does an outstanding job of raising funds for the BHA’s many needs. This fundraising may be a part of an event\, for an individual project\, or for a continued generation of funds over the years. Lastly\, the Couples award goes to an energetic pair who doubles their fun by donating their expertise and enthusiasm resulting in twice as much service to the BHA. \nNominations are now being accepted and submissions can be made by cutting out and mailing in your ballot to the Beaufort Historical Association at 150 Turner Street\, Beaufort\, NC 28516.  The ballot can be downloaded online at www.beauforthistoricsite.org.
