He vividly remembers the smell of Menhaden steamers moored at Beaufort’s docks\, the cool air of the season’s first mullet shift and the simple pleasure of swimming across “the cut” on a hot summer’s day. Learn a bit of Beaufort’s history and hear his recollections of what it was like growing up in this historic seaport village before it became Southern Living’s Top Small Town to Visit! \nHe’s planning for his presentation to be a multifaceted event\, including a discussion about growing up in “pre-discovery” Beaufort\, as well as the physical and cultural changes that have occurred here since the 1950s. DESCRIPTION:***NOW FULL***\n\nHear from Warren Bingham on his book\,” George Washington’s 1791 Southern Tour”. Bingham has been featured in notable print as well as broadcast media such as PBS. He will also be signing and selling his book. He grew-up in North Carolina and has lived most of his adult life in Raleigh. Though Bingham has had a career in financial and philanthropic services\, he has long maintained a vigorous sideline as a writer and speaker on topics in history. In 2016\, his book on Washington’s Southern Tour was published and he took a year to make over a hundred public and media appearances scattered from DC to Georgia.. During that book tour\, Bingham spoke twice at Mount Vernon\, appeared on C-SPAN\, was interviewed by National Public Radio in Atlanta\, appeared on Wilmington television news\, and was featured on North Carolina BookWatch on PBS North Carolina.\n\nThe event will take place in the Courthouse on the BHA’s grounds and is FREE for all but RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED due to limited space. Attendees will be able to enjoy a refreshing beverage\, meet Harvey\, purchase a copy of The Wedding Veil\, and have it personalized. \nKristy Woodson Harvey is a local New York Times best-selling author who has been featured in The Washington Post and USA Today\, among other national publications. She is well-known for her Peachtree Bluff Series\, which follows the life of the Murphy sisters in their home of Peachtree Bluff\, a fictional town based on Beaufort\, North Carolina. Harvey’s new book\, The Wedding Veil\, is the story of four generations of women who are all bound by one family heirloom\, a beautiful wedding veil\, which has a secret connection that will change their lives – and history as they know it – a veil tied to the famous Vanderbilt family. \nJoin us in toasting Harvey and celebrating these powerful women of multiple generations. Signed copies of The Wedding Veil will be available for purchase through the Old Beaufort Shop. Proceeds help benefit the many preservation and education programs at the Beaufort Historic Site. SUMMARY:Angela Harker Art Show
DESCRIPTION:The Mattie King Davis Art Gallery is excited to welcome artist Angela Harker this coming April. A free show will be held at the gallery on Friday\, April 1 from 4:30 – 6 p.m. All events are subject to change. Harker will be the featured artist for the months of April and May. \n“As a child\, I was always painting and crafting\, and in my early career as a First and Second Grade Teacher\, there were countless artistic avenues to explore\,” Harker said. “I have always dabbled in anything and everything creative.” \nHarker says\, growing up in the countryside of Zimbabwe fueled her creative side and feels it is the reason she is drawn to color and light. “The vibrant colors\, coupled with the luminosity of pastels and the immediate results that they create really appeal to me.” While many of Harker’s pieces are pastels\, she does not restrict herself in the use of other mediums. \nWhile she draws constant inspiration from her homeland\, she also draws from the natural world around her. “I have developed a passion for painting animals and love to add this element to the landscapes I paint\, be it a bird in the marshes or a wild pony on the North Carolina seashore\,” she said. “I strive to create a peaceful and harmonious scene that the observer can easily relate to and enjoy.” \nHarker has achieved much in her artistic career and has been accepted into many juried shows. However\, she says her “greatest thrill” is when someone wants to purchase a piece and hang it in their home. Many of her pieces are now in homes on several continents. \nCome find a special new piece for your home this coming April! SUMMARY:Civil War Marker Dedication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Join the Beaufort Historical Association on Thursday\, February 9\, at 3 p.m. for the unveiling and dedication of the new Civil War Trails Marker at 608 Mulberry Street. The project results from a continued partnership between the Crystal Coast Tourism Authority and Civil War Trails\, Inc.\n\nThe new marker provides historical information about “Union Town\,” a refugee camp built-in 1862 by African Americans who fled enslavement to Union-occupied Beaufort.\nThe dedication will start with the Presentation of Colors by The United States Colored Troops 35th regiment reenactment group. It will also feature special guest speaker\, Civil War Trails Board Chair and Visit NC’s Partner Relations Manager\, André Nabors.
