SUMMARY:Black History Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Beaufort Historic site for a special English Double-Decker Bus Tour about Black History in Beaufort\, N.C. Beaufort native\, Curtis Oden will narrate. This informative historic bus tour will cover over 25 sites and will take off from the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner St. on September 5 at 3 p.m. and September 19 at 1:30 p.m. The tour will last about an hour and will cost $15 per person. \nThe bus will be driven through the streets of downtown Beaufort while Oden points out historic sites such as churches\, stores\, and residents that have been influential in shaping black history in Beaufort. \nOne of the very first black-owned stores in the town was a shoe shop that sat next to the Josiah Bell House on Turner St. “It was one of the very first black-owned shoe shops and it was run by Mr. Adam Wright and also my great grandfather\, Collins Oden\, and then later my great uncle Curtis Oden was the one who ran it\,” Oden said. \nOden’s relatives were not the only black-owned businesses in the area.  Just down the road on Front St. was a blacksmith shop that was owned by a man named Mr. Fisher. On that same street was the Sam Lipman Convenience Store and it sat directly where the First Citizens Bank ATM is now. \nWhile Oden will point out many older historic areas\, he also will show you some of the places he grew up visiting such as the Purvis Chapel A.M.E. Zion Methodist Church and the old location of The Beaufort Theater. \n“During the ’50s and ’60s my friends and I would go to the Beaufort Theater\, and see then it was whites would sit on the main level and the blacks would have to set in the balcony\, but it was always okay\, we would make jokes about how we really had the best seats in the house!” Oden said. “I grew up and was baptized at the Methodist Church (Purvis Church) and that is where blacks and whites would worship together\, there it was also white people on the main level and blacks in the balcony.” \nNo stranger to the community\, Oden said he is excited to come back and narrate this tour for Beaufort and all of its residents and visitors. He said one of his favorite things about doing the tour is getting to talk about all that Beaufort used to be and what it has become to all of the tour groups. “I like getting to see the people’s excitement about the things I am telling them about Beaufort\,” Oden said\, “Getting to have had grown up in the community and being able to do this tour and talk about some of the stuff I grew up with has been one of my favorite things.” \nTickets are on sale now at the Beaufort Historic Site Welcome Center. For more information or to reserve your ticket\, call 252-728-5225 or visit the center at 130 Turner Street\, Beaufort. Masks are required for the tour.

SUMMARY:Janet Jaworski Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Please be aware that all events at the Beaufort Historic Site are open to change in light of COVID19. For more information please call 252-728-5225. Thank you. \nThe Mattie King Davis Art Gallery is excited to welcome artist Janet Jaworski for an art show on Saturday\, August 15 at 5 p.m. at 130 Turner Street\, Beaufort\, N.C. The event is free and will follow federal\, state\, and local guidance regarding COVID19 during the time of the show. Jaworski is a North Carolina artist based in Morehead City. She paints primarily with oils. Many of her works showcase the beautiful wildlife\, seascapes\, and more of the Crystal Coast. \n\n\n\n“When my husband came down here for work\, we were struck by the area\,” she said. “We would be wandering and exploring nature and wildlife\, he started doing more photography… and now many of his photos are the start of my paintings.” \n\n\n\n    \n\n\nJaworski’s style reflects her vibrant personality; her paintings are full of color and life rather it be one of the tumbling ocean or a soaring bird. “My style has always had to do with color. I love color and it is one of those elements I strive to have standout in my paintings\,” she said. “I also want to portray a realist image but work within those images to create abstractions.” \n\n\n\nShe is no stranger to design though. While raising her family she spent much of her career working in graphic design in Worcester\, M.A. As her children began to move out she zoned in more on her art. She began taking workshops at the Worcester Art Museum and even started selling some work at a local farmers market. \n\n\n\n“My daughter was in charge of a farmer’s market in Acton…the market allowed for one artisan per week and she signed me up for a slot for spring and fall\,” she said. “I was not expecting much\, but to my surprise I sold quite a bit\, and in the fall\, people came back to buy again. She feels very proud to have launched me 11 years ago.” \n\n\n\nAfter moving to North Carolina she became involved in the artistic community. She is on the Executive Board of the Arts Council of Carteret County\, takes classes with artist Heather Sink\, participates in multiple workshops throughout the county\, volunteers at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery\, and is in charge of hanging art at the Cassie Howe Algeo Gallery within the Carteret Health Care Hospital. She said she loves getting to meet fellow artists and travel to different locations to create. \n\n\n\nWhen asked about her favorite accomplishment thus far she said\, “Bringing people joy. Once you have finished a painting it really has a life of its own.” \n\n\n\nJoin us in welcoming Jaworski this August at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery. She will be the featured artist for August and September. For more information about the gallery or the artist\, call 252- 728-5225\, visit beauforthistoricsite.org\, or stop by the gallery at 130 Turner Street.

SUMMARY:Membership Drive Valentine Party
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Sunday before Valentine’s Day\, the Beaufort Historical Association welcomes the public to enjoy food\, fun\, and fellowship as it opens the authentically restored homes and buildings of the Beaufort Historic Site during its annual Valentine Membership Party. This year’s event will be held Sunday\, February 9\, between 2 and 4 p.m.\, welcoming current members and encouraging new members to join. \nThe Membership Drive has been a tradition for many years. It started in 1992 as a Valentine’s Party in a private home to attract new members. By 2000 the planning committee realized that the attendance had more than outgrown any private home in Beaufort. The party is now hosted at the Historic Site\, where two acres and all authentically restored houses and buildings are open for members and potential members to enjoy and learn more about this area’s coastal heritage. \nEach house or building features different\, special refreshments for visitors to enjoy. There will be beer and pizza in the Jail\, olive oil tastings in the Courthouse\, an oyster roast in the School Master’s Cottage\, hot mulled cider in the Leffer’s Cottage\, fudge in the Apothecary\, sparkle and fizz beverages in the Josiah Bell House\, wine and cheese in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery\, hot chocolate and coffee in the Safrit Historical Center\, and hors d’oeuvres and spirts under the tent. An on-site docent will be present in each of the buildings to answer questions about the history of the structure and the furnishings found within. \nA special part of the Valentine Membership Party will be an art opening with featured artist\, Heather Sink\, whose work will be on display and for purchase at the circa 1732 Mattie King Davis Art Gallery. Sink hails from Northern England and now resides in Beaufort. Many of her pieces showcase her time spent in Northern England as well as here in Beaufort. \n\n\n\n“My favorite thing about painting is the journey\, the process\, and learning\,” she said. “Painting has connected me with all kinds of wonderful people that have a common interest.” \n\nBefore opening Craving Art Studio she taught art to students in the North Carolina Public School System. Today she still teaches art in her studio and at workshops. Many of the artists featured in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery have even been mentored and or influenced by Sink. Heather Sink will be the gallery’s featured artist for February and March\, be sure to stop in and see her gorgeous work. Visit the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery Facebook page to get a peek at some pieces! \nAll are invited to this FREE Valentine’s Party. Be sure to come and bring along family\, friends\, co-workers\, and neighbors who have an interest in joining the Beaufort Historical Association and taking part in the varied preservation and education programs. \nThe BHA’s strong association of individuals dedicated to preserving the treasured history of Beaufort spans across the county\, state\, and nation and offers a wide range of membership levels. Dues start at $25 for students and senior citizens\, $35 contributor\, $100 sponsor level and upwards\, and each tier of membership receives special benefits. SUMMARY:January Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Members and prospective ones are invited to join the Beaufort Historical Association for the Annual Membership Meeting and potluck dinner on January 21\, 6 p.m.\, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 215 Ann Street in Beaufort. The meeting is a perfect opportunity to make friends with fellow members and new ones while enjoying a delicious meal. \nDuring the meeting\, there will be a special presentation of the film Beaufort Remembers\, a Scrapbook Productions\, Inc. and Beaufort Documentary Group film about the daily life of Beaufort from the 1920s to the 1960s\, told in the voices of those who lived it. \n“The premiere of the documentary in December was a huge success bringing the whole community together in celebration of Beaufort’s past\,” BHA Executive Director Patricia Suggs said. The event was completely sold out\, so this gives our members a chance to see a portion of the film.” \nThe 2019 Volunteer Awards will also be presented. The BHA will present the prestigious Edward and Frances Piver Volunteer of the Year Award to the outstanding volunteer of the year. This award was established in 1968 by the Piver children to honor their parents. \nThe selected recipients of the Piver award are a group that has excelled above their commitment to the BHA and have been leading figures in its success. The Association is fortunate to have volunteers who give their time and talents in a variety of ways from guided tours\, driving the double-decker bus\, serving on committees\, answering phones\, helping with events\, and more. \nThe Newcomer\, Longevity\, Couples\, and Fundraiser awards will also be presented. The Newcomer is for the “rookie” who has made a meaningful contribution in a relatively short time as a member.  The Longevity is presented to a long-time volunteer who has devoted time over many years and provided unselfish assistance to the BHA in a variety of ways. The Fundraiser is for the person who does an outstanding job of raising funds for the BHA’s many needs. This fundraising may be a part of an event\, for an individual project\, or for a continued generation of funds over the years. Lastly\, the Couples award goes to an energetic pair who doubles their fun by donating their expertise and enthusiasm resulting in twice as much service to the BHA. \nNominations are now being accepted and submissions can be made by cutting out and mailing in your ballot to the Beaufort Historical Association at 150 Turner Street\, Beaufort\, NC 28516.  The ballot can be downloaded online at www.beauforthistoricsite.org. You may also call 252-728-5225 or email officemanager@beauforthistoricsite.org to submit a nomination. \nFor additional information on the Membership Meeting\, stop by the Visitors Center at 130 Turner Street\, call 252-728-5225\, or visit beauforthistoricsite.org. \n  \nDOWNLOAD VOLUNTEER AWARDS BALLOT

SUMMARY:Art Gallery Opening for Monica Linares
DESCRIPTION:Art Gallery Opening for Mónica Linares \nJoin the Beaufort Historical Association on Aug. 3 from 5 until 7 p.m. to welcome artist Mónica Linares for an art gallery opening at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery located at the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner St. Beaufort\, N.C. \nBorn and raised in Venezuela\, Linares was always surrounded by paint and brushes thanks to her artistic father. With a background in advertising\, she has always been in contact with design\, color\, and style. However\, it wasn’t until 1999 that she started to formally start her training as an artist at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Today\, each of her paintings continues to develop as she learns and is inspired by the people\, things\, and life around her. \nLinares style is as unique as her. She has a graphic style which is characterized by simplicity\, interesting design\, and strong brushwork. Her work was recently featured at the North Carolina Museum of Art Gift Shop during the Georgia O’Keefe exhibit. \nShe says\, “I paint because I love it.  I enjoy creating\, I love colors\, combinations\, a challenge\, experimenting and making a space happier.  I enjoy bringing joy!  So that is what you’ll see in my paintings.” \nOver 20 of Linares paintings will be showcased during the art gallery opening. Her work will continue to fill the walls of the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery for the month of August and September. \nFor more information about this free event or the artist stop by the Beaufort Historic Site Welcome Center\, call 252-728-5225\, or visit www.beauforthistoricsite.org.

SUMMARY:Black History Bus Tour with Curtis Oden
DESCRIPTION:Learn Beaufort’s Black History atop a Double Decker Bus \n  \nAs part of the Beaufort Historic Site’s Living History Series\, Beaufort native\, Curtis Oden will narrate a special English Double Decker Bus Tour about black history in Beaufort\, N.C. This informative historic bus tour will cover over 25 sites and will take off from the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner St. on June 7\, June 14\, July 13\, and July 24 at 11 a.m. \n“During the 50’s and 60’s my friends and I would go to the Beaufort Theater\, and see then it was whites would sit on the main level and the blacks would have to set in the balcony\, but it was always okay\, we would make jokes about how we really had the best seats in the house!” Oden said. “I like getting to see the people’s excitement about the things I am telling them about Beaufort\,” Oden said\, “Getting to have had grown up in the community and being able to do this tour and talk about some of the stuff I grew up with has been one of my favorite things.” \nFor information on this and other Living History Programs\, stop by the Beaufort Historic Site Welcome Center at 130 Turner Street\, call 252-728-5225 or visit www.beauforthistoricsite.org for a full calendar of events.    \n.

SUMMARY:Dolphin Tales
DESCRIPTION:North Carolina Maritime Museum’s Natural Science Curator\, Keith Rittmaster\, will discuss his research on local dolphin identification at the Beaufort Historic Site’s Welcome Center. His Photo-ID dolphin research project has been going on since 1985.  Keith\, his wife Vicky Thayer\, and other colleagues have been permitted through NOAA Fisheries to study dolphins by making regular trips to photograph the dolphins’ dorsal fins. Rittmaster has approximately 1\,200 different dolphins identified in an online database that allows people to match the fin photos\, and in turn\, leads to discoveries in bottlenose dolphin migrations\, associations\, genetic stocks\, and birthrates. \n“The information we learn about where the dolphins go and how they’re using the coast is used by the National Marine Fisheries to help determine fishing regulations. We’re not just doing this for the fun of it\,” Rittmaster said. “Federal fish biologists also use it to learn about the genetic pools of bottlenose dolphin populations.” Rittmaster’s work is important to know what may have caused a stranding and\, ultimately\, the death of a marine mammal. \nThis fascinating presentation is free and open to the public\, but seating is limited so reservations are required.  To make reservations\, email Denise Finley at bhaeducation@outlook.com\, call the Beaufort Historic Site at 252-728-5225\, or stop by the Welcome Center at 130 Turner Street.
