SUMMARY:Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Our volunteers play an integral part in the programs and functions that take place at the Beaufort Historic Site. Without these volunteers\, many of our events would not be possible. We love welcoming eager and positive additions to the volunteer family. This year\, the one-day Volunteer Training Program will be on Tuesday\, March 9 from 9 – 4 p.m. at the Historic Site.  Anyone interested in either volunteering occasionally or on a regular basis will have the chance to learn about more than 20 volunteer opportunities available at the training session. We will also provide a delicious lunch. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to tour the buildings\, ride the double-decker bus\, tour the Old Burying Ground\, and see how volunteer docents work with the many visitors who come to the site. During lunch\, prospective volunteers will have an opportunity to meet the BHA staff\, hear about the many ways to help and ask questions to better understand the vital role volunteers play in the daily functions of the BHA. \nNew volunteers are invited to learn about Beaufort’s colorful history while discovering the perfect volunteer opportunity with the BHA. Please register in advance by calling the BHA at (252)728-5225\, e-mail us at bhaeducation@outlook.com\, or stop by the Welcome Center located at 130 Turner Street.

SUMMARY:Growing up in Beaufort (NOW FULL)
DESCRIPTION:(NOW FULL) Join the waitlist by calling 252-728-5225. \nJoin us on Friday\, August 5 at 7 p.m. at St. Pauls Church for a chat with Geoffrey Adair who was born and raised in Beaufort and is a member of the sixth generation of his family to live on Orange Street. He vividly remembers the smell of Menhaden steamers moored at Beaufort’s docks\, the cool air of the season’s first mullet shift and the simple pleasure of swimming across “the cut” on a hot summer’s day. Learn a bit of Beaufort’s history and hear his recollections of what it was like growing up in this historic seaport village before it became Southern Living’s Top Small Town to Visit! \nHe’s planning for his presentation to be a multifaceted event\, including a discussion about growing up in “pre-discovery” Beaufort\, as well as the physical and cultural changes that have occurred here since the 1950s. He also plans to have a thirty-minute slide presentation comprised of 200 photos of Old Beaufort paired with photos of the same scenes as they appear today. \n\nPlease call 252-728-5225 to rsvp. \n\nThe event is free. \nAll Beaufort Historic Site events are subject to change.

The journey’s finale was the Southern Tour\, begun in March 1791. The long and arduous trek from the capital\, Philadelphia\, passed through seven states and the future Washington\, DC. But the focus was on Virginia\, the Carolinas\, and Georgia. The president kept a rigorous schedule\, enduring rugged roads and hazardous water crossings. His highly anticipated arrival in each destination was a community celebration with countless teas\, parades\, dinners\, and dances. SUMMARY:Voices of the Past: SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT \n\nThe Beaufort Historic Site will be hosting a special Old Burying Ground Tour on Saturday\, October 30 at 5:30 p.m. The tour\, taking place Halloween weekend\, is called Voices of the Past. It will bring to life the stories of those who have long passed and have been laid to rest in the Old Burying Ground. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for ages 6-12\, and will be available for purchase in the Old Beaufort Shop until October 29 or until sold out.\n\n  \nWhile the Historic Site offers tours of the Old Burying Ground year-round\, Voices of the Past will have a twist. Guests will be grouped with an appointed “Burial Caretaker”\, who knows the ins and outs of the grounds and will lead them through this unique experience. As guests traverse through the grounds by mere lantern light\, they will find the Old Burying Ground quite literally coming to life. \n  \nSeven different burial sites of seven passed souls with seven unique stories will be a part of this tour. However\, instead of the “caretaker” sharing these stories\, those who have passed will tell their own. Guests can expect to hear the story of Vienna Dill\, a child buried in a unique casket; Josiah Bell\, the past owner of the Josiah Bell House now located on the Historic Site Grounds; a British Officer\, who is buried in a way to honor the British Crown; Captain Otway Burns\, a naval hero in the War of 1812; the Girl Buried in Rum; Nancy Manney French\, the story of forbidden love reunited; and Sarah Gibbs and Jacob Shepard\, the story of lost lovers in life\, but together in death. \n  \nTickets are on sale now by calling 252-728-5225 or by visiting the Old Beaufort Shop\, located on the grounds of the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner Street.
