SUMMARY:Membership Drive Valentine Party
DESCRIPTION:For years the annual membership drive served as the primary source of support to carry the Historic Site through quiet winter seasons. Though winter is busier now\, this event still plays a crucial role in providing essential funding to care for and maintain our valued grounds\, gardens\, and buildings. \nMany members note this is a favorite BHA tradition. This is an open house event FREE to the community that welcomes new members and volunteers. Every historic building on the grounds will be open for hands-on exploration\, learning\, and discovery. Best of all\, it’s for everyone – adults and kids alike! \nRefreshments will be thoughtfully prepared by local businesses and generous volunteers. Helping hands and food sponsors are always needed and so if you are interested in volunteering or sponsoring\, please call 252-728-5225. \nRemember the RSVP so we know how many to expect! Invite friends\, family\, coworkers\, neighbors\, or anyone curious to learn more about the Historical Association. We offer a wide range of activities and events year-round with membership options beginning at just $25 for students and seniors\, extending to the $5\,000 Somerset Circle level. Each tier offers its own benefits. New memberships may be purchased at the Valentine Party or online at beauforthistoricsite.org under the shop tab. \nFor more information about the Valentine Party\, new memberships\, or membership renewal\, stop by the Welcome Center at 130 Turner Street\, or call us at 252-728-5225. \n2026 Membership Drive Valentine Party Invitation \n\nThis year\, the organization is moving toward more paperless correspondence in an effort to be more environmentally friendly. Guests are strongly encouraged to RSVP using the form below and to include their name and the total number of guests in their group. \nIf assistance is needed for your RSVP\, please contact the Beaufort Historic Site Welcome Center at 252-728-5225. \nClick here to fill out the Valentine Party RSVP form\n\nValentine Party Featured Artist Information:\n \nAnnie Kinney Villa is the Featured Artist for the Valentine Party. Her exhibition will be on view in the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery from February through the end of March 2026. Annie grew up along the western seacoast of Ireland\, in a remote region known as the Burren. After traveling in her twenties\, she settled in North Carolina\, where she fell in love with the area’s seasonal weather\, pristine beaches\, and rugged mountains. During the pandemic\, she transitioned from painting occasionally to working as a full-time artist. She is primarily self-taught and continues to explore the creative process through workshops and connections with other artists. \nDiscover more about Annie Kinney Villa and view other artwork on her website: https://www.anniekinney.com/

SUMMARY:Voices of the Past (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:*SOLD OUT*\n\nThe Beaufort Historic Site will be hosting a special Old Burying Ground Tour on Saturday\, October 29 at 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The tour\, taking place Halloween weekend\, is called Voices of the Past. It will bring to life the stories of those who have long passed and have been laid to rest in the Old Burying Ground. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for ages 6-12\, and will be available for purchase in the Old Beaufort Shop until sold out.\n\nWhile the Historic Site offers tours of the Old Burying Ground year-round\, Voices of the Past will have a twist. Guests will be grouped with an appointed “Burial Caretaker”\, who knows the ins and outs of the grounds and will lead them through this unique experience. As guests traverse through the grounds by mere lantern light\, they will find the Old Burying Ground quite literally coming to life.\n\nEight different burial sites of eight passed souls with eight unique stories will be a part of this tour. However\, instead of the “caretaker” sharing these stories\, those who have passed will tell their own.\n\n\nEach tour will last roughly an hour and will only welcome 50 guests\, so reserve your spot soon! Tickets are on sale now by calling 252-728-5225 or by visiting the Old Beaufort Shop\, located on the grounds of the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner Street.

SUMMARY:Voices of the Past: SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT \n\nThe Beaufort Historic Site will be hosting a special Old Burying Ground Tour on Saturday\, October 30 at 5:30 p.m. The tour\, taking place Halloween weekend\, is called Voices of the Past. It will bring to life the stories of those who have long passed and have been laid to rest in the Old Burying Ground. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for ages 6-12\, and will be available for purchase in the Old Beaufort Shop until October 29 or until sold out.\n\n  \nWhile the Historic Site offers tours of the Old Burying Ground year-round\, Voices of the Past will have a twist. Guests will be grouped with an appointed “Burial Caretaker”\, who knows the ins and outs of the grounds and will lead them through this unique experience. As guests traverse through the grounds by mere lantern light\, they will find the Old Burying Ground quite literally coming to life. \n  \nSeven different burial sites of seven passed souls with seven unique stories will be a part of this tour. However\, instead of the “caretaker” sharing these stories\, those who have passed will tell their own. Guests can expect to hear the story of Vienna Dill\, a child buried in a unique casket; Josiah Bell\, the past owner of the Josiah Bell House now located on the Historic Site Grounds; a British Officer\, who is buried in a way to honor the British Crown; Captain Otway Burns\, a naval hero in the War of 1812; the Girl Buried in Rum; Nancy Manney French\, the story of forbidden love reunited; and Sarah Gibbs and Jacob Shepard\, the story of lost lovers in life\, but together in death. \n  \nTickets are on sale now by calling 252-728-5225 or by visiting the Old Beaufort Shop\, located on the grounds of the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner Street.

SUMMARY:Black History Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Beaufort Historic site for a special English Double-Decker Bus Tour about Black History in Beaufort\, N.C. Beaufort native\, Curtis Oden will narrate. This informative historic bus tour will cover over 25 sites and will take off from the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner St. on September 5 at 3 p.m. and September 19 at 1:30 p.m. The tour will last about an hour and will cost $15 per person. \nThe bus will be driven through the streets of downtown Beaufort while Oden points out historic sites such as churches\, stores\, and residents that have been influential in shaping black history in Beaufort. \nOne of the very first black-owned stores in the town was a shoe shop that sat next to the Josiah Bell House on Turner St. “It was one of the very first black-owned shoe shops and it was run by Mr. Adam Wright and also my great grandfather\, Collins Oden\, and then later my great uncle Curtis Oden was the one who ran it\,” Oden said. \nOden’s relatives were not the only black-owned businesses in the area.  Just down the road on Front St. was a blacksmith shop that was owned by a man named Mr. Fisher. On that same street was the Sam Lipman Convenience Store and it sat directly where the First Citizens Bank ATM is now. \nWhile Oden will point out many older historic areas\, he also will show you some of the places he grew up visiting such as the Purvis Chapel A.M.E. Zion Methodist Church and the old location of The Beaufort Theater. \n“During the ’50s and ’60s my friends and I would go to the Beaufort Theater\, and see then it was whites would sit on the main level and the blacks would have to set in the balcony\, but it was always okay\, we would make jokes about how we really had the best seats in the house!” Oden said. “I grew up and was baptized at the Methodist Church (Purvis Church) and that is where blacks and whites would worship together\, there it was also white people on the main level and blacks in the balcony.” \nNo stranger to the community\, Oden said he is excited to come back and narrate this tour for Beaufort and all of its residents and visitors. He said one of his favorite things about doing the tour is getting to talk about all that Beaufort used to be and what it has become to all of the tour groups. “I like getting to see the people’s excitement about the things I am telling them about Beaufort\,” Oden said\, “Getting to have had grown up in the community and being able to do this tour and talk about some of the stuff I grew up with has been one of my favorite things.” \nTickets are on sale now at the Beaufort Historic Site Welcome Center. For more information or to reserve your ticket\, call 252-728-5225 or visit the center at 130 Turner Street\, Beaufort. Masks are required for the tour.
