SUMMARY:Artist Talk with our Featured Gallery Artist BF Reed!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Artist Talk with our Featured Gallery Artist BF Reed\, April 25th from 11:00am to 12:00pm in the Beaufort Historic Site Welcome Center at 130 Turner Street\, Beaufort\, NC. Coffee and refreshments will be available as Reed will present an engaging artist talk and live demonstration focused on the pastel medium. She will begin with a brief overview of pastel – its history\, unique qualities\, and why it remains a powerful and often misunderstood fine art medium. The demonstration will follow\, offering insight into her personal process\, including surface preparation\, layering techniques\, and the development of light and form. Visitors will have the opportunity to see how a painting evolves in real time and to ask questions throughout the session.\n \nThis event is FREE\, although an RSVP is requested so we can prepare adequate seating for those who plan to attend. RSVP by calling 252.728.5225 Monday – Saturday\, 9:30am – 5:00pm.\nBF Reed is a contemporary artist working in both highly realistic pastel and expressive abstract acrylic painting. Her work explores light\, reflection\, and the balance between control and spontaneity—often juxtaposing precise observation with atmospheric\, intuitive mark-making. Drawing inspiration from coastal North Carolina and carefully constructed still life arrangements\, her paintings invite viewers to pause and look more closely at the interplay between reality and perception.\n \nAnd this recent news: We congratulate BF Reed on her 2nd Place award at the Wilmington Art Association’s 44th Annual Juried Art Show last month! The painting that received the award is ‘Tea Before the Clouds Move’ pictured far right in the accompanying image\, which is indicative of her love of blue and white porcelain and reflective objects. Curing waves\, glass\, botanicals\, and koi are also prominent subjects in her work.\nBF is currently our featured artist in the Mattie King Davis Gallery where many stunning pastel pieces are on display and available for purchase. Don’t miss the April 25th talk or her show in the Gallery through May 27\, 2026!

SUMMARY:Fall Party
DESCRIPTION:They say COVID changed everything\, but thank goodness the Fall Party has only had minor changes. In 2020 we completely cancelled the party. In 2021 plans changed quickly from a private home and the party was moved to the Historic Site. It gave us more room and a whole art gallery to hang all the amazing art. This year the party will again take place on the grounds of the Historic Site. Blue Moon Jazz and Scarborough Fare will be back. This year\, we are fortunate to have two accomplished artists\, Audrey Cushman from New Bern\, NC and Karen Crenshaw from Jacksonville\, NC. We got to know Audrey and Karen through our partnership with NC Plein Air New Bern when the BHA hosted a paint out and wet paint sale in Beaufort. This event has grown tremendously in only 4 short years into an eight-day event with 35 nationally and globally acclaimed plein air artists. We are extremely appreciative to have two of them for our 2023 Fall Party. \nTickets for the Fall Party are $125 \nBUY YOUR TICKETS HERE \n

SUMMARY:Angela Harker Art Show
DESCRIPTION:The Mattie King Davis Art Gallery is excited to welcome artist Angela Harker this coming April. A free show will be held at the gallery on Friday\, April 1 from 4:30 – 6 p.m. All events are subject to change. Harker will be the featured artist for the months of April and May. \n“As a child\, I was always painting and crafting\, and in my early career as a First and Second Grade Teacher\, there were countless artistic avenues to explore\,” Harker said. “I have always dabbled in anything and everything creative.” \nHarker says\, growing up in the countryside of Zimbabwe fueled her creative side and feels it is the reason she is drawn to color and light. “The vibrant colors\, coupled with the luminosity of pastels and the immediate results that they create really appeal to me.” While many of Harker’s pieces are pastels\, she does not restrict herself in the use of other mediums. \nWhile she draws constant inspiration from her homeland\, she also draws from the natural world around her. “I have developed a passion for painting animals and love to add this element to the landscapes I paint\, be it a bird in the marshes or a wild pony on the North Carolina seashore\,” she said. “I strive to create a peaceful and harmonious scene that the observer can easily relate to and enjoy.” \nHarker has achieved much in her artistic career and has been accepted into many juried shows. However\, she says her “greatest thrill” is when someone wants to purchase a piece and hang it in their home. Many of her pieces are now in homes on several continents. \nCome find a special new piece for your home this coming April! For more information about the artist and or the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery\, call 252-728-5225\, visit beauforthistoricsite.org\, stop in at the Safrit Welcome Center at 130 Turner Street. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Black History Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Beaufort Historic site for a special English Double-Decker Bus Tour about Black History in Beaufort\, N.C. Beaufort native\, Curtis Oden will narrate. This informative historic bus tour will cover over 25 sites and will take off from the Beaufort Historic Site at 130 Turner St. on September 5 at 3 p.m. and September 19 at 1:30 p.m. The tour will last about an hour and will cost $15 per person. \nThe bus will be driven through the streets of downtown Beaufort while Oden points out historic sites such as churches\, stores\, and residents that have been influential in shaping black history in Beaufort. \nOne of the very first black-owned stores in the town was a shoe shop that sat next to the Josiah Bell House on Turner St. “It was one of the very first black-owned shoe shops and it was run by Mr. Adam Wright and also my great grandfather\, Collins Oden\, and then later my great uncle Curtis Oden was the one who ran it\,” Oden said. \nOden’s relatives were not the only black-owned businesses in the area.  Just down the road on Front St. was a blacksmith shop that was owned by a man named Mr. Fisher. On that same street was the Sam Lipman Convenience Store and it sat directly where the First Citizens Bank ATM is now. \nWhile Oden will point out many older historic areas\, he also will show you some of the places he grew up visiting such as the Purvis Chapel A.M.E. Zion Methodist Church and the old location of The Beaufort Theater. \n“During the ’50s and ’60s my friends and I would go to the Beaufort Theater\, and see then it was whites would sit on the main level and the blacks would have to set in the balcony\, but it was always okay\, we would make jokes about how we really had the best seats in the house!” Oden said. “I grew up and was baptized at the Methodist Church (Purvis Church) and that is where blacks and whites would worship together\, there it was also white people on the main level and blacks in the balcony.” \nNo stranger to the community\, Oden said he is excited to come back and narrate this tour for Beaufort and all of its residents and visitors. He said one of his favorite things about doing the tour is getting to talk about all that Beaufort used to be and what it has become to all of the tour groups. “I like getting to see the people’s excitement about the things I am telling them about Beaufort\,” Oden said\, “Getting to have had grown up in the community and being able to do this tour and talk about some of the stuff I grew up with has been one of my favorite things.” \nTickets are on sale now at the Beaufort Historic Site Welcome Center. For more information or to reserve your ticket\, call 252-728-5225 or visit the center at 130 Turner Street\, Beaufort. Masks are required for the tour.

SUMMARY:Janet Jaworski Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Please be aware that all events at the Beaufort Historic Site are open to change in light of COVID19. For more information please call 252-728-5225. Thank you. \nThe Mattie King Davis Art Gallery is excited to welcome artist Janet Jaworski for an art show on Saturday\, August 15 at 5 p.m. at 130 Turner Street\, Beaufort\, N.C. The event is free and will follow federal\, state\, and local guidance regarding COVID19 during the time of the show. Jaworski is a North Carolina artist based in Morehead City. She paints primarily with oils. Many of her works showcase the beautiful wildlife\, seascapes\, and more of the Crystal Coast. \n\n\n\n“When my husband came down here for work\, we were struck by the area\,” she said. “We would be wandering and exploring nature and wildlife\, he started doing more photography… and now many of his photos are the start of my paintings.” \n\n\n\n    \n\n\nJaworski’s style reflects her vibrant personality; her paintings are full of color and life rather it be one of the tumbling ocean or a soaring bird. “My style has always had to do with color. I love color and it is one of those elements I strive to have standout in my paintings\,” she said. “I also want to portray a realist image but work within those images to create abstractions.” \n\n\n\nShe is no stranger to design though. While raising her family she spent much of her career working in graphic design in Worcester\, M.A. As her children began to move out she zoned in more on her art. She began taking workshops at the Worcester Art Museum and even started selling some work at a local farmers market. \n\n\n\n“My daughter was in charge of a farmer’s market in Acton…the market allowed for one artisan per week and she signed me up for a slot for spring and fall\,” she said. “I was not expecting much\, but to my surprise I sold quite a bit\, and in the fall\, people came back to buy again. She feels very proud to have launched me 11 years ago.” \n\n\n\nAfter moving to North Carolina she became involved in the artistic community. She is on the Executive Board of the Arts Council of Carteret County\, takes classes with artist Heather Sink\, participates in multiple workshops throughout the county\, volunteers at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery\, and is in charge of hanging art at the Cassie Howe Algeo Gallery within the Carteret Health Care Hospital. She said she loves getting to meet fellow artists and travel to different locations to create. \n\n\n\nWhen asked about her favorite accomplishment thus far she said\, “Bringing people joy. Once you have finished a painting it really has a life of its own.” \n\n\n\nJoin us in welcoming Jaworski this August at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery. She will be the featured artist for August and September. For more information about the gallery or the artist\, call 252- 728-5225\, visit beauforthistoricsite.org\, or stop by the gallery at 130 Turner Street.
