Beaten Biscuits with Sarah Smith

May 13 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

| FREE
Learn the lost art of how to make biscuits without yeast! Join Sarah Smith for this special workshop. The Old Beaufort Shop will also feature a wide range of Historic Teas that are perfectly paired with your biscuits!

Before baking powder was invented, beaten biscuits were a staple food.  They were a primary food source for Civil War soldiers.  Later in the 1800’s the “Beaten Biscuit Brake” was invented. They have a distinct texture and they do not drop crumbs like baking powder biscuits. The last company to make them commercially was in Maryland and closed a few years ago.  They are still made in small production by a Kentucky company.  They were featured in an article in “Garden and Gun” a few years ago. Sarah will give a brief history, show participants the Brake and let folks sample the biscuits.

This will be held in the Jail and is FREE to the public.

All Beaufort Historic Site events are subject to change.
