Beaufort Old Homes Tour Selected as STS Top Event

The Southeast Tourism Society (STS) has selected one of the Beaufort Historical Association’s annual events as one of the Top 20 Events for the month of June 2006.  This will be the fifth time that the BHA’s Old Homes & Gardens Tour and Antiques Show & Sale has received this honor.

The annual Beaufort Old Homes Tour celebrates its 46th anniversary this year and will be held June 23rd and 24th.  The Antiques Show and Sale, held in conjunction with the Homes Tour, will be held June 23rd, 24th and 25th.  Since 1960 this annual weekend has been a time of community involvement and pride where Beaufort residents proudly open the doors to their splendid historic homes to help support the preservation and educational programs at the Beaufort Historic Site.

From small cottages to grand waterfront homes this year’s tour features ten private historic homes, glorious gardens, all the houses and buildings at the Beaufort Historic Site, churches and meeting halls, an Antique Car Show, Living History demonstrations, and a narrated tour of the Beaufort Historic District aboard a vintage English double-decker bus.  The Antiques Show welcomes over 40 fine antiques vendors to the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City for 3 days of great antiquing for any budget.  The weekend is officially opened with the Carteret Chorale Concert on Thursday, June 22nd at 8:00 pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.  Laurence Stith and his well-known local singers provide the perfect beginning to an event-filled weekend.  Closing out the weekend this year will be the popular Carteret Community Band with a concert on the Historic Site grounds at 6:00 pm on Sunday, June 25th.

The wide variety of activities and events as well as the careful selection of private homes and gardens for the Tour makes the weekend event one of the best in the area.  “It’s the whole ambience of the town that makes this event so special where residents go to so much trouble to make sure everything looks perfect for the Old Homes Tour weekend, whether their house is on the tour or not,” says Patricia Suggs, BHA Executive Director.  Winning this award is also special for all the volunteers that work so hard on this event, starting with our Old Homes Tour Committee, chaired by Pam Phillips, and continuing with the many BHA friends that volunteer in the Homes and Gardens and at the Antiques Show.”  “The sponsors are also the ones who help us get noticed for an award such as the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events, adds Mrs. Suggs.  They along with the Carteret County Tourism Grant funding have allowed us to greatly expand our advertising in quality publications to draw tourists from around the country that keep coming back year after year.”

Since 1983, the Southeast Tourism Society has been the largest membership organization promoting travel to the Southeast.  Beginning in 1985, STS has selected 20 of the top events across the southeast each month.  The listing is sent to over 300 newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations, and to 125 AAA publications.

Events selected for the STS Top 20 enjoy free, widespread publicity and have the honor of being included among a listing of prestigious events and festivals.  The Crystal Coast Tourism Development Authority is a member of the Southeast Tourism Society and provides Top 20 Event information to local constituents.

Advance ticket orders can now be placed for the Old Homes and Gardens Tour and Antiques Show and Sale.  Ticket prices for the Old Homes & Gardens Tour and Antiques Show and Sale combination are $18 in advance, $22 the days of the events. Tickets may also be purchased separately. A ticket for the Old Homes & Gardens Tour is $16 in advance and $20 at the door.
